Born in South Korea and raised in France, Mathis Joubert is a French dancer, choreographer, creative director, and Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe 2026 honoree in Art & Culture. His work moves fluidly between contemporary ballet, breaking, acrobatic physicality, fashion, film, and large-scale live performance. At the heart of his artistic practice lies
THE BALLETBREAK, his signature movement language, rooted in a dual foundation of classical ballet and breaking, where technical precision, musical sensitivity, theatricality, and explosive physicality converge.
Mathis began dancing as a self-taught breakdancer, founding his first crew,
Slybreak Danse, while still in middle school. In 2013, he won his first breakdance battle, an early milestone that confirmed both his instinct for performance and his natural competitive drive. His passion for movement and creation later evolved through formal artistic training. He attended
Suzanne Valadon High School, where he joined an artistic atelier led by
Sergio Simón, Director of the
Limoges Opera, before pursuing professional dance training in Toulouse.
From 2013 to 2016, he studied classical ballet at VM Ballet while continuing to deepen his breakdance foundation with ABD-L, a member of the world-champion Vagabond Crew, at Break’in School. During this same period, Mathis performed in Urban Ballet with Cie Amalgam, in partnership with Anthony Egea’s Compagnie Rêvolution, at La Villette in Paris. This rare dual training and early professional experience became the cornerstone of his artistic identity, shaping a movement vocabulary that brings together the discipline of ballet, the freedom of contemporary dance, and the raw energy of breaking.
In 2016, Mathis received several major distinctions, including the Best Talent Award at the AmsterDans International Competition, First Prize at #lamiastoriadidanza at the Capézio and Danza in Fiera, First Prize at Get Up et Fais Ton Truc by Jamel Debbouze and Carrefour, and Second Prize at the Prix d’Europe in the Senior Contemporary Solo category.
These awards opened the door to a series of scholarships and professional opportunities, including a professional contract offer with J.B.E., Jeune Ballet Européen, as well as a scholarship to study at
AID, Académie Internationale de la Danse in Paris, directed by Nicole Chirpaz. Choosing to pursue his development on an international scale, Mathis moved to New York City on a full scholarship to train at
Peridance Capézio Center before joining
The Alvin Ailey School, where he completed a two-year program on full scholarship.
His artistic formation was further enriched through scholarships and intensive programs with
Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Jacob’s Pillow, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Visceral Dance Chicago, and the
École Nationale Supérieure de Danse de Marseille. This exceptional and diverse training refined his versatility as a performer and laid the foundation for a distinctive artistic voice, balancing classical rigor, contemporary nuance, and the instinctive power of breaking.
Mathis began his professional career performing at the 25th Anniversary Gala of Complexions Contemporary Ballet at The Joyce Theater in New York, where he took part in the world premiere of Switch Phrases by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. In 2018, he joined Arch Ballet as a company member, performing at New York City Center and Eden Fine Art Gallery on Madison Avenue.
During this period, he also assisted
Michael Blake, former Director of the
Joffrey Ballet School, teaching classes at Steps on Broadway. He collaborated with renowned choreographers and creators including
Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish, Christopher Huggins, Ray Mercer, Jennifer Archibald, Brice Mousset, and others.
He was also featured in Nick Cave’s monumental month-long exhibition, The Let Go, at the Park Avenue Armory, choreographed by Francesca Harper, then Director of Alvin Ailey II. The production received critical acclaim and was honored with a Bessie Award for Outstanding Production.
In 2019, Mathis received professional offers from leading contemporary companies including

and
White Eagle Dance Company, founded by former Paris Opera Ballet étoile and former Director
Patrick Dupont
alongside Leïla Da Rocha.
That same year, he was personally invited by the producer of
DAS Supertalent, the German edition of the Got Talent franchise, to participate directly in its live semi-finals, an exceptional invitation reflecting his growing visibility as a distinctive and versatile performer.
He ultimately joined Visceral Dance Chicago as a company member, touring internationally and performing at the Santa Lucía Festival in Mexico. Since 2019, he has also been a principal dancer with Bad Boys of Ballet / SweetBird Productions, appearing in leading roles in acclaimed European touring productions including Rock the Ballet, Romeo & Juliet, and Rock the Ballet X. These productions have taken him to some of Europe’s most prestigious theatres and cultural venues across Germany, France, Switzerland, and Belgium.

He performed as a principal dancer and choreographer for a private ceremony commissioned by the Sultan of Abu Dhabi, appeared at the Darley Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, broadcast live on Yas TV, and performed as a principal dancer in Le Cheval Joyeux at Potel & Chabot Paris, produced by RêvARTE Entertainment.
He also performed at the Riyadh Season Festival in Saudi Arabia, dancing live before 13,000 spectators, with the broadcast reaching more than 110 million viewers on Rotana Live TV, alongside Assala Nasri and Majid Almohandis, two of the Middle East’s most celebrated artists.
In 2021, Mathis performed on the national tour Un Été en France with world-renowned cellist Gautier Capuçon and choreographer Sébastien Bertaud of the Paris Opera Ballet. He also appeared in the nationally broadcast Concert de Paris, performing atop the Eiffel Tower on Bastille Day.

In 2022, Mathis worked aboard
Ponant Cruises’ luxury polar icebreaker,
Le Commandant Charcot, operating primarily in Antarctica. He served as
Show Director, Artist Manager, Choreographer, and Principal Dancer, conceiving, choreographing, directing, managing, and performing in original productions designed for one of the world’s most extraordinary travel environments.
From 2023 to 2024, Mathis was a company member and choreographer with "Verb" Ohio Contemporary Ballet. During this time, he performed at Playhouse Square in Cleveland and at the Gerald Arpino Centennial Celebration at Joffrey Ballet. He also choreographed an original work for the full company, integrating THE BALLETBREAK into the ensemble’s movement language.
During the same period, Mathis was invited as a guest artist to choreograph and perform an original BALLETBREAK work for The Cleveland Foundation Gala at the Cleveland Museum of Art, bringing his signature movement language to one of the city’s leading cultural and philanthropic events.
In parallel, he continued to establish himself as a teacher, mentor, choreographer, performer, and international competition judge.
