Born in South Korea and raised in France, Mathis Joubert is a French dancer and creator whose work bridges contemporary ballet, breakdance, fashion, film, and large-scale performance. His signature movement language, The BalletBreak, is rooted in a dual foundation of classical ballet and breakdance, combining technical precision, musical sensitivity, and explosive physicality.

He began dancing as a self-taught break dancer, founding his first crew, Slybreak Danse, while still in middle school. He later joined Suzanne Valadon High School, alongside an atelier directed by Sergio Simón, Director of the Limoges Opera, before entering professional training in Toulouse. There, he studied classical ballet at VM Ballet (2013–2016) while simultaneously strengthening his breakdance foundation with ABD-L of the world-champion Vagabond Crew at Break’in School.

In 2016, he earned several major distinctions, including the Best Talent Award at the AmsterDans International Competition, 1st Prize at #lamiastoriadidanza (Capezio & Danza in Fiera Festival), 1st Prize at « Get Up et Fais Ton Truc » (Jamel Debbouze & Carrefour), and 2nd Prize at the Prix d’Europe (Contemporary Solo Senior).

Through these competitions, Mathis received multiple scholarships and professional opportunities, including a professional contract offer with the J.B.E – Jeune Ballet Européen, as well as a scholarship to study at the AID – Académie Internationale de la Danse in Paris, directed by Nicole Chirpaz. Choosing to further develop his artistry on an international scale, he moved to New York on a full scholarship to train at the Peridance Capezio Center, before joining The Alvin Ailey School, where he completed a two-year program on full scholarship.

He continued to expand his technical range through additional scholarships and intensive training programs with Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, the Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Program, Visceral Dance Chicago, and the École Nationale Supérieure de Danse de Marseille. This high-level and diverse training laid the foundation for his hybrid artistic identity, blending classical rigor, contemporary nuance, and the raw energy of breaking.

Mathis began his professional career performing at the 25th Anniversary Gala of Complexions Contemporary Ballet at The Joyce Theater, including the world premiere of “Switch Phrases” by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. He also performed with Arch Ballet at the New York City Center and the Eden Fine Art Gallery on Madison Avenue.

During this period, he also assisted Michael Blake, former Director of the Joffrey Ballet School, teaching classes at Steps on Broadway. He collaborated with renowned choreographers and creators including Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish, Christopher Huggins, Ray Mercer, Jennifer Archibald, and Brice Mousset.

He was also featured in Nick Cave’s monumental one-month exhibition The Let Go at the Park Avenue Armory, choreographed by Francesca Harper, Director of Alvin Ailey II. The production was critically acclaimed and awarded a Bessie Award, one of the highest honors in American dance.

In 2019, Mathis received multiple professional offers from leading contemporary companies, including Spectrum Dance Theater, Ballet Hispánico II, Nimbus Dance, Kayzer Ballet, Na-Ni Chen Dance Company, Catapult Entertainment, Sonia Plumb Dance Company, as well as White Eagle Dance Company, founded by world-renowned dancer, former étoile and former Director of the Paris Opera Ballet, Patrick Dupont, alongside Leïla Da Rocha.

He ultimately chose to join Visceral Dance Chicago, touring internationally, including performances at the Santa Lucía Festival. That same year, he joined Bad Boys of Ballet - SweetBird Productions, performing leading roles in major European touring productions such as Romeo & Juliet, and Rock the Ballet X across Germany, France, Switzerland, and Belgium.

Mathis quickly gained international visibility through large-scale productions and high-profile televised events. He performed as a principal dancer and choreographer for a private ceremony commissioned by the Sultan of Abu Dhabi, appeared at the Darley Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and performed at the Riyadh Season Festival in Saudi Arabia, dancing live in front of 13,000 spectators and more than 110 million viewers on Rotana Live TV, alongside two of the Middle East’s leading superstar singers Assala Nasri & Majid Almohandis

In 2021, he performed on the national tour Un Été en France with world-renowned cellist Gautier Capuçon and choreographer Sébastien Bertaud (Paris Opera Ballet), and appeared in the nationally broadcast Concert de Paris, performing atop the Eiffel Tower on Bastille Day.

His versatility also led him into the worlds of fashion and media. He appeared as a runway model during New York Fashion Week in Times Square and Philadelphia Fashion Week, and performed as a dancer during Paris Fashion Week for FRED at the Palais de Tokyo. He also appeared in commercial campaigns for Stade Français, Club Forfait, CPF, and DSTI School of Engineering, and performed in Story of a Hat by Lesly Lynch, a fashion film awarded at the Fashion Film Festival of Chicago. In addition, he appeared in editorial shoots for Beaux-Arts Magazine × CooKoon Paris.

In 2022, Mathis worked as a principal dancer aboard a luxury polar icebreaker sailing primarily in Antarctica. During this project, he created original productions and served as choreographer, Show director, and Artist manager aboard Le Commandant Charcot with Ponant Cruises.

In 2023–2024, he joined ‘‘Verb’’ Ohio Contemporary Ballet as a company member. During this period, he choreographed a new work, integrating his movement language, The BalletBreak, created for the full company. In parallel, he continued to establish himself as a teacher, mentor, and judge for international dance competitions such as Les Espoirs de la Danse and Bravissimo International Competition. He also received notable professional offers from Broadway productions, including The Lion King (Paris) and The Little Prince.

In 2024, Mathis became a company member of BalletX, one of the most influential neo-classical ballet companies in the United States. With BalletX, he performs works by leading choreographers including Justin Peck, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Jennifer Archibald, Marguerite Donlon, Stina Quagebeur, Amy Hall Garner, Matthew Neenan, Gregory Dawson, Take Ueyama, Alex Ketley, Jo Strømgren, Noelle Kayser, Keelan Whitmore, and JA Collective. He appears on major international stages including the Kennedy Center, Joyce Theater, Harris Theater, the Guggenheim Museum, the Vail Dance Festival, and the Laguna Dance Festival, while touring extensively across the United States and internationally, including Canada at the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur, founded by Guillaume Côté.

Alongside his performing career, Mathis continues to develop his choreographic voice and multidisciplinary approach while actively sharing his experience through teaching and mentorship. He regularly leads workshops and masterclasses in France (Toulouse at VM Ballet, Loches, Montpellier for Les Espoirs de la Danse, Pamiers and beyond) and in the United States (Cleveland, Philadelphia at The Garden Arts Center, and Baltimore for the Winter Intensive with SweetBird Productions).
